“GREAT TIMING,” PRICE ASHWORTH COMPLAINED. Although he’d just sat down to dinner, he managed to grab the phone before the third ring, his gold pen in hand, prepared to take the message from his answering service. Then the pen stopped. He said, “Thank you,” then hung up and said to Laura, “I’m sorry. I’ll call from the other room.”

SITTING in the therapist’s outer office, Jacob waited less than three minutes before the telephone rang. When he picked up, Price said in a low-toned voice, “I suggest you get the hell out of there. I just called the police.”

Jacob thought for a second or two. “I don’t believe you did,” he said. “But maybe I will. You know, Alix Callahan left a suicide note.” It was a fabrication, but one he hoped would shake some information free.

After a period of silence, Price came back in a whisper: “Alix Callahan was delusional. Same as you.”

Jacob felt a glow of satisfaction, knowing he had nicked a nerve. “I see here that she was a patient of yours for a couple of months, every Wednesday, her last session June twenty-two.”

“And?” Price’s confidence returning, as if he was fishing to see what Jacob had put together.

“She revealed something to you in therapy. You used it against her.”

“Doesn’t her suicide note explain it?” Price, back on the offensive.

“So far, I haven’t mentioned any of this to the police,” Jacob told him. “But someone tried to poison my son today, and I think you know who, and why.”

“You are crazy,” Price shot back. Then Jacob heard him cover the phone and say, presumably to Laura, “I’m talking to a patient. Go ahead. I’ll be right there.”

Jacob said, “Sounds like I called at a bad time.”

“Stay calm, everything will be okay,” Price replied, his telephone manner changed.

Jacob smiled. “I’ll bet Laura didn’t leave the room like you asked her to.”

“I’ll be there as soon as I can,” Price said in that compassionate voice.

“No, I’ll bet she’s standing right there,” Jacob said, “giving you that look of hers that makes you wonder if she can see right through you.”

“Fifteen minutes,” Price told him.

“It’s only a matter of time,” Jacob said.
